If you have been off cycling for a while, you would be surprised at the kind of choice you have these days when it comes to buying a cycle. There are bikes of all types, shapes sizes and budgets. So which one would you choose? We will try and help you out a bit.

Types of bikes - Bikes available in the Indian market can be broadly classified into  -

Mountain Bikes - These are rough and tough bikes in which you can take on any kind of terrain. They are especially meant for off-roading and trails. Most newbies go for a mountain bikes to start with as they can be used in any surface. The Hercules Ryders, Cannondale MTB, Schwinn MTBs are good examples.

Road Bikes - These are sleek bikes meant for speed on a smooth surface. They are aerodynamically designed to ensure efficient utilisation of effort. In other words all your effort translates to forward motion. The BSA Mach, Cannondale CAAD, San Jose are a good example of these.

Hybrid Bikes - These are mountain bikes and road bikes rolled into one. You can use these bikes in a variety of terrains. These would be a good choice to start with if you are not sure if you are mountain biker or a road biker yet. They are also excellent choice for regular, day to day commute. Good examples of hybrid bikes are Bianchi, Schwinn, Cannondale.

In terms of budget, bikes are available from 6,000/- going all the way up to a few Lacs.
